About me
My name is Sue Barclay. I am a teacher of the Alexander Technique, a visual artist, a licensed Dynamic Emotional Integration® (DEI) trainer and consultant, and the creator of Art and Emotions, a creative and embodied approach to emotional integration. I am also a trained yoga practitioner.
My work is rooted in a deep interest in how we move, think, feel, and make meaning in our lives. Whether I am working with someone through movement and embodied learning, or exploring the inner world of feelings and emotions, my aim is to offer both support and practical skills that people can take into their daily lives, helping them learn new ways to reconnect with themselves through self-awareness, creativity, and meaningful change.
I first came to Alexander Technique lessons seeking relief from anxiety and physical tension. I didn’t know what to expect, but I left those early sessions feeling noticeably calmer and more grounded. That experience stayed with me, and after some years of taking lessons, I felt called to train as a teacher. I currently teach the Alexander Technique at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, offering individual lessons and group courses to students, as well as evening classes for the general public. In my private practice I work one-to-one and lead small workshops.
Alongside this, I offer Art and Emotions consultations and courses, a creative and experiential way of working with emotions through simple art and mark-making practices, inner reflection, and body-based awareness. This approach grew from my own experience as a professional artist, my training in Dynamic Emotional Integration® with Karla McLaren, and my many years exploring the connections between movement, creativity, and healing. These sessions draw on the basic principles and empathic mindfulness practices of DEI while allowing for my own intuitive and flexible way of working.
My approach to all my work is gentle, respectful, and holistic. I welcome people from all walks of life and aim to create a space where each person feels met and supported. I often work with people who feel a bit out of step with conventional approaches to wellbeing, including those who are neurodivergent, and I value the richness that diverse ways of experiencing the world bring to this work.
Whether through art, movement, or emotion, I am most interested in helping people learn practical ways to reconnect with themselves in authentic, empathic, and transformative ways.
